Necessary Preparation and Family Time – #JNGListens

Happy Sunday Readers! It’s that time of the week again…time for another #JNGReads/#JNGListens quote and another explanation of what I was up to literature/music-wise this week!

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you’ll know that this week was a very eclectic one for me. I started the week with an Annie Lennox song stuck in my head (she’s awesome and one of my favourite female rockers on a list that also includes Pat Benatar, Heart and Joan Jett!), and then began reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in a collection with several other “strange stories” I plan to delve into in honour of the season premiere of Penny Dreadful tomorrow (see my last blog entry for a passionate review of this TV show). Obviously, there wasn’t a clear link between the quotes I posted toward the beginning of the week, but my selections for Thursday and Friday, including my choice for today’s #JNGListens post, were entirely appropriate to what was going on in my life toward the end of the week.

From Thursday onward, I began engaging in some absolutely necessary preparation for a big event last night: my parents, my boyfriend and I went to see John Mellencamp in concert in Toronto! Now, many of you may wonder why this requires preparation, or even why I was so excited to see an older artist like Mellencamp. Well, if you’ve been reading this blog regularly, you’ll know that I am a HUGE fan of rock music, specifically because my dad introduced the genre to me when I was just a child. I am OBSESSED with Bruce Springsteen, I’ve been to see The Eagles (Don Henley is just so sexy to me!), Tom Petty and AC/DC in concert, to name a few, and I have always had a soft spot for John (Cougar) Mellencamp because he is my mom’s personal favourite rock artist. I’ve already seen him in concert what feels like a thousand times, but my boyfriend never has and my parents wanted to go again…so what better excuse to have a Saturday night double date with your own parental unit?! And, my parents and I have this philosophy that it is NECESSARY to listen to an artist’s music for days and days before going to their concert, so we can sing at the top of our lungs and not miss a single word!

We had a blast! I am so close to my parents – they are my best friends in the world, in different but equally important ways. My dad is the one I go for runs with in the summer, the one who pushes me physically to be my healthiest self, and the one who thinks exactly the same way as me in terms of finances, future plans, religion, politics, etc. My mom is my dearest, sweetest companion; she’s like a sister to me, but she is also so warm and compassionate and she takes care of me in every way. I can rely on my parents for anything and they are so young at heart (and even in terms of age compared to a lot of my friends’ parents), so we find common ground on every subject. I am unbelievably lucky to have them, and to be able to gush about them so happily!

Going to the John Mellencamp Concert

So, in honour of my remarkable parents and the wonderful night they gave me and my boyfriend, this week’s quote is one from my favourite Mellencamp song…a line that reminds me to enjoy every moment, to never be done living, even when the day or night comes to an end…because the fun times never stop when you have a family like mine!

“Well, it’s time to go home and I ain’t even done with the night.” – Ain’t Even Done With The Night, John Mellencamp
